Notes: Follow up to the first in what has become a series, Guardian, which was inspired by a scene towards the end of the movie.
It was dark when Murtagh heard the dragon return. Before he’d crawled into the pile of furs that had become their makeshift bed, he’d sat in the entrance to the cave and watched the sun dip behind the mountains leaving the sky bloody in its wake, wondering if Eragon would return. Or more precisely, return to him. In the few short nights he’d been at Eragon’s side while his friend shrugged off the fever, he’d come to need the warmth of his body pressed against him while he slept, even if that sleep had been fitful as he tended to Eragon.
Loneliness stabbed through Murtagh’s heart and he scowled at himself and buried his face in his makeshift pillow. He didn’t need anyone. He’d been fine on his own before, and he would be again. He wasn’t about to let the dragon rider change that.
He was so lost in his own thoughts that when a hand landed softly on his shoulder, he jerked away from it and sat up with a start.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Eragon’s face was illuminated by the flickering firelight and his smile was one of gentle amusement as he looked down at his friend.
“You didn’t.” Murtagh frowned and he huffed as he lay down again, his back to Eragon.
He heard the rustle of outer clothes being discarded, sure that the rider would find somewhere to curl up on his own. So when Eragon slipped beneath the furs, Murtagh jumped again, glad that Eragon couldn’t see the shocked expression on his face, or the way it melted into contentment edged with need as Eragon wordlessly slipped an arm around him and pulled him close.
Exhausted, Eragon promptly fell asleep, leaving Murtagh awake and wanting more. He pressed back into the embrace, which only resulted in a soft groan and a leg sliding over his, effectively pinning him down as Eragon snuffled in his sleep. With a sigh, Murtagh settled for committing the way he felt at being held by the rider to memory. It wasn’t the same as the previous nights, because this time Eragon had chosen to be there, he wasn’t there because a delirious fever had put him involuntarily into Murtagh’s care. Eragon’s face was buried in Murtagh’s dark silky hair and his steady breathing warmed Murtagh’s neck making his skin tingle, and it was a long while before he too fell into a dream filled sleep.
