Last Wish

Title: Last Wish
Characters: Théodred
Rating: PG
Warnings: Character death, and therefore angst
Book/Source: Unfinished Tales
Disclaimer: Don't own 'em, not for profit
Notes: My first drabble, written for the [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly Endings challenge. Also for the Ends prompt for [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100. Disclaimer nicked from Seleneheart and Ribby. Influenced by a recent email conversation and based on Théodred's last words as given in the "Unfinished Tales".

They assailed him on all sides, more than any man could counter even with his riders fighting beside him. No ambush, this, it was an execution. With a savage slash of a stray Orc blade, he fell without a cry, blood running freely into the river.

"Let me lie here,”

to rest a while. Have …

“… to keep the Fords …”

… cannot leave …

“… 'til Éomer comes …”

… ‘til he comes for me …

Théodred’s final thoughts and words mingled, their meaning lost forever as with one last rattling breath, his life ebbed and he was still.

… ‘til he comes for me …
My gods! What have I started here!

This is gorgeous, with the interplay of the recorded words and the true meanings behind them.

(And welcome, by the way - it's a treat to have you here with us! Visit often!)

Thank you! I've always thought there must have been a deeper meaining behind his words.

It was written during a bout of insomnia and just after seeing the title for your "Last Words" which brought Théo's to mind. And voila! Angst :)

And thanks for the welcome!

Welcome! Always nice to see new writers, and you especially!

And oh, this is beautiful... and so sad. I love the interpolation of last words and last thoughts, it makes it so much more real. Poor Theodred!

Thanks for the welcome. What a friendly comm!

His story is such a tragic one, it just lends itself to sadness. *sniffles*

I've always been in awe of folk who can drabble *looks in your direction* and even more so now I've finally managed one. And I did enjoy the challenge of playing with words like that so maybe I'll give it another go :)

*sob*

*has nothing else to say right now*

*passes you a hankie*

And I love your icon! So sad it's got me sobbing :(

Now you have me crying. And Éomer too, I think.

*wipes away your tears*

*passes Éomer a mansized hankie*

:(

Good stuff. You've made us all sad now. :P

Ah ha!! My plan worked!!

Or should that be ... "There, there ..." *pets you*

Thank you :) I finally drabbled!

*tear* You really do his death justice in a hundred words. Nice writing!

Thank you :)

He was given so little time in Tolkien's writings that I love to expand on his story.

I find it hard to believe this is your first drabble. The shifting perspectives from spoken words to thoughts is just gorgeous. Welcome, and please post again when inspiration strikes.

Thank you! It's something I've never tried before because I always tend to run on and never know how to stop, but fitting everything into 100 words was an interesting challenge :)

So much emotion, and so many images in so few words. Loved this line, "No ambush, this, it was an execution."
Nicely done!
