I think the biggest thing we need to keep in mind is that it's only been days since Sam beat the crap out of Dean and choked him, days since he chose Ruby over Dean and walked out on him. It's going to take time to heal things, but Dean has changed. He is independent now, able to let go of his brother. Think about the fact that Zach was killing Sam and Dean said: "then kill us..."
